Having watched 'Tonight' I have re-examined my feelings towards the McCanns. Did I change my mind?
No! & here's why...
When the news first broke that Madeleine had been abducted her parents stood in front of the media begging for her safe return. Like everyone else at the time, my heart went out to them. I watched as he took control of the media spotlight while she held his hand looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights. In the days that followed we were drip fed bits of information that was gradually dispelled. For example -
the parents had gone for a quick evening meal at a restaurant in sight of their apartment. In truth, they had gone out for the evening with their friends;
they were not in view of their apartment;
they did not check on their children as regularly as first stated;
it was not the first time they'd left them alone to go out for the evening.
Relatives went on TV stating that the apartment had been broken into, the window had been forced and Madeleine taken. This was later denied by Police; doors were left unlocked, giving easy access to anyone who had watched the family.
Speculation has been rife as to why Madeleine didn't cry out; was she given a mild sedative?
What sort of parents would leave a three year old alone with two babies? What would have happened if they'd woken? If this didn't cause them concern, why not? If they are to be believed and they did check every 30 minutes, were they not concerned about leaving such young children alone for so long? A lot can happen in 30 minutes - watch any soap if your not convinced. How far can you drive in 30 minutes? How far can you walk? Her abductor would have been long gone by the time the alarm was raised.
But the main reason my mind won't be changed is because they were wrong to leave one child and two babies alone in a foreign country. Whatever has happened to her is because of their actions, not because she was snatched in a moment. They failed to keep her safe.
Like many, I have been involved in heated discussions about this and why I do not have sympathy for them. It always comes back to the same questions - were they right to leave them? Were they responsible for what happened to her? Should they have paid for the child sitting service? Would you have left your children?
Some times in life we have to accept responsibility for our own actions. The McCanns should stop trying to fool us into believing they are victims. I personally would be more sympathetic if they hadn't patronised us in the beginning............cassie
