So, I followed his advice and changed my supplier from the sponsors of the FA cup to that well known bunch of thieving toerags from over the border: you know who you are!!
I compared their prices online and decided that £160 was better in my pocket than theirs. How wrong could you be!
My account prior to switching was £96 in credit. For a period of 3 weeks I've been mugged for an extra £50!! + my monthly payment of £96!!
Now convince me that the utility companies are not running a cartel!! Helped by ML and this bloody useless govt!!

Hello MSE Team! I'm impressed!
However, I've been with EON for absolutely ages and my account with them was in credit (based on actual readings), yet for a period of 3 weeks I've paid nearly £50 more than my usual monthly payment. This cannot be right! &...the credit amount that was on my EON account has disappeared into the big black hole the supply companies have between them. I do appreciate that the advice given by your team is very general BUT I'm sure I'm not the consumer fallen foul of the sharp practices the utilities use.
I've been back in touch with both suppliers and they blame each other!! The standard of service is appalling - it's exasperating trying to reason with someone who just repeats the company mantra...."We are very competitive"
Thanks for responding..........cassie
Hi there cassiefrappz,
I'm on Martin's research team, just spotted your blog and just wanted to clear up a few things.
When you move to a new provider, it has no usage history for you and usually estimates what it thinks you'll use in a year and divides this by 12. The best thing to do is look through your bills for the last 12 months and get on the blower to your provider. Explain your usage patters and ask it to agree a lower direct debit. It can be an unfortunate side affect of switching but it doesn't mean you're actually paying more for the energy your using. More info here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/lower-energy-direct-debits
Thanks
